Magazine Fashion Images Review

I should probably review this magazine, but I’ll save that for another day. Danielle at finalfashion mentioned this contest a while ago, but I didn’t actually visit the contest site until yesterday. It seems like a fun idea. Fashion Magazine is looking for ten bloggers to keep Canada updated on their local fashion scenes. The winning bloggers will get $1200 for twenty-four posts that will run bi-monthly over the next year. It’s not much, but since most bloggers work for free, it’s enough to buy a shiny, new computer or a nice pair of winter boots at Gucci.

I was going to enter, but I don’t believe Fashion magazine would make me a semi-finalist. I’m too much of a know-it-all, and some people find that threatening. I can’t say that I blame them. I shake in my own presence when I think about how fabulous I am.

I also can’t shut my trap when it comes to how much I loathe Fashion File since Adrian Mainella took over the hosting duties. Because the magazine and the TV show are in a partnership, I imagine I’d get into a little trouble if they realized that Prunella Crudsworth is Auntie Fashion.

Summer Fashion Collection Photos

The summer season arrives with some designs we already know. Shorts, dresses and mini-skirts are popular this season.
It seems the dry and warm weather that prevails has inspired designers to make some garments that combat the summer heat. These garments are perfect to get a more juvenile aspect, but mainly, a fresh and very modern appearance.
As expected, the colors and the designs are really nice with a retro style.
Electric blue, lemon green, yellow and red are some predominant tones in this seasonNude colours and pastel shades are doing great this season. Fluorescent colours are also in,” informs Agnimitra. “If you have to choose from nude shades, you can go for beige, ivory. However for western wears, you can opt for neon colours like orange and green.”
Nil says, “Nude shades look great for both daywear and eveningwear alike. Pastel shades of baby pink, sky blue are soothing to the eyes for summer dresses.” But if you are keen to dress distinctively for the evening, Nil opines colours like black and patrol blue will make you look ravishing!
“Clothes in bright coloured checks and stripes are the smart picks for this season,” says Sunil Daswani of Nu York shop. “You can also keep pace with the style statement for summer by shopping in full length maxi dresses and oversized shirts. Denim qualifies as a great summer fabric.

The sad decline of la femme fantastique

Ever since Germaine Greer appeared on Celebrity Big Brother, helplessly vomiting after being spun around on a merry-go-round for 15 minutes with Bez from the Happy Mondays, there has been speculation that la femme fantastique is no longer being entirely serious. At the weekend, true to late form, she instructed an audience at the Cheltenham Literary Festival that her mother was a ‘Nazi’ and there ought to be an online register for date rapists.

‘I wish there were an online rapists’ register and that was kept up to date, because we know the courts can’t get it right’, said Greer, who is now a professor of English at Warwick University. ‘When I say that to people, they get so scared, and say “Oh you can’t. What about privacy?”’ (What about defamation, Germaine?) ‘Years ago, I knew we would never get convictions in a court of law for date rape, so I suggested women kept an online dossier, so if a woman had a date with a guy and he did something to her, or frightened her, and she asked him to stop and he didn’t, then instead of going to the police she should put him online. Other women could check this dossier, look up a guy and see that he has form. Then she can say no, or if she does go, goes knowing it’s a high-risk strategy.’

Convictions for date rape are, as Greer says, very low, but outing men online as rapists, without reporting them to the police, is madder than a tea party in Wonderland. First of all, the straightforward name-and-shame strategy means that any person who has genuinely committed date rape will not be prosecuted – because the victim will simply register details of the rape on a website rather than try to get the alleged rapist jailed, where he should undoubtedly be. Secondly, it means that practically any man can be outed as a date rapist – because all the site would have to go on is a woman’s word for it. So ex-girlfriends with a grudge, or anyone who finds a man just a bit dodgy, could, theoretically, stick his name on this Wild West-style Wanted list for Dating Central for all to see. The idea has nothing to do with receiving justice or upholding feminist values. If put into practice it would be even more dangerous than the Sex Offenders Register – for all its faults, at least the names on that list have been found guilty of something.

Greer needs to start making a better case for how feminists can make society better today – and a better defence of her legacy. The Female Eunuch, her most famous book, published in 1970, was the subject of an extraordinary attack by Neil Lyndon in The Sunday Times at roughly the same time as she was giving her talk in Cheltenham. ‘Every boy whose education is treated as a secondary concern, every young man who has to get to the back of the queue for a job behind more favoured women… all these millions are entitled to view the fortieth anniversary of The Female Eunuch as an occasion for something other than celebration’, he ranted, before going on to cite the film Sleeping With The Enemy (a Julia Roberts movie about a woman whose husband regularly thrashes her to within an inch of her life) as an example of how ‘the disparagement of men became the routine stuff of movies’. I think I’m going to ask Neil Lyndon what planet he is living on and perhaps move there.

Actually, the humourless Lyndon – who blamed attacking feminism for a total collapse in his income in the 1990s – fails to see that in her glory years Greer seemed really rather glorious. She was not the awful, humourless Andrea Dworkin-type figure who claimed all heterosexual intercourse was rape he appears to confuse her with. She was the pin-up girl for girls who were fed up with bores just like him. Her electric prose touched femalekind (or at least Adrian Mole’s mother) like a cattleprod, as she told everyone who would listen that she didn’t bother with underwear.

‘The housewife is an unpaid employee in her husband’s house in return for the security of being a permanent employee’, she wrote. Anyone dismissing the relevance of The Female Eunuch now (as so many talking heads so sniffily do) should thank their lucky stars that they’ll never be a frustrated housewife – unless they choose to be, in which case the element of frustration is diminished. Greer’s flourish with the written word is hard to surpass. Her diary of the Big Brother house was almost worth her descent into it. ‘Damn right I don’t like [fellow housemate Brigitte Neilsen] or her habit of grabbing her store-brought breasts, banging them together like cymbals and shouting “Hot diggity!” at the top of her lungs, by way of signifying that she is having a good time.’

Greer will always be a crowd-pleaser, a guaranteed paragraph-generator for the bookers of debate panels - but if only she could start thinking of something better to say.

Turning celebrity breakdown into art

A child star’s fate is as predictable as rain in an English summer. Drew Barrymore did ET - and then cocaine at 13. Michael Jackson perfected his dance moves early on – then his skin turned and he began hanging out with a monkey. Britney Spears leapt to superstardom via The Mickey Mouse Club – before talking to trees, shaving her head and beating a pap with an umbrella.
So when Joaquin Phoenix, younger brother of River – an A-list heartthrob until he died of a drugs overdose at 23 – announced that he was quitting acting to make a rap record, ballooned and grew a beard worthy of the dead Rasputin, no one was particularly surprised.

‘Wearing a ladies’ hairclip to tie back his scraggy hair and his chiselled jaw covered up with a long, bushy beard, Phoenix looked a world away from the handsome Roman Emperor Commodus in 2000 epic Gladiator’, noted the Daily Mail, rather breathlessly, after Phoenix’s disastrous, mumblecore appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, before adding that he was so off the rails that he wasn’t accepting any wholegrain, yoga-ised, raw vegetable words of wisdom from his Two Lovers co-star Gywneth Paltrow. ‘Gwyneth is somebody who tried to reach out to Joaquin after he no-showed their movie premiere in Cannes. But he just wasn’t responsive.’

Not wanting to talk to Gwynnie about things was probably the first sign that Phoenix was not doing a Britney at all, but rather acting out a breakdown for a documentary about the nature of celebrity, filmed by his brother-in-law Casey Affleck. The result, I’m Still Here, has not been a hit at the box office, nor has it impressed many of Phoenix’s female fans, but it is a thought-provoking and downright weird piece of mock-reportage which suggests that Phoenix has a rather wild sense of humour, underneath all that actor-y, tortured passion he’s got his Oscar nominations for.

The film opens with Phoenix deciding to jack in Hollywood and ends with him falling off stage, being violently sick, retiring to Panama and sinking in a river. On the way, he raps increasingly ludicrous songs which seem to send up a certain white version of hip-hop tryhard – by which everyone thinks they can crack a rags to riches rhyme, even if they’re Madonna – and tries to get Sean Puffy / P Diddy / Diddy Coombs to produce his record. Coombs, who is still most famous for ripping up a Sting song in a tribute record to his murdered mate Notorious B.I.G, is a bad rapper himself. When Phoenix announces that he’s aiming at doing ‘the hip-hop Bohemian Rhapsody’ you can see Mos Def’s face twitching.

As Phoenix gets fatter and fatter and fatter, more and more stoned, does cocaine off the boobs of hookers, falls off stage, vomits and has an actor guru telling him that he’s a raindrop (‘That’s you, drops of water and you’re on top of the mountain of success’), the laughs get harder and more uncomfortable.

The film is too long and many seem to think that it is going to derail Phoenix’s career. But in arresting the celebrity breakdown narrative and taking it apart, Phoenix has produced something far more thought-provoking than whatever blockbuster that might be next on his agenda.
