Road Trip!

It’s not exactly news, but something triggered my mind late last night and compelled me to take a trip down memory lane to the amazing collaboration between McQ and London based photographer Niall O’Brien. McQ’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection was captured by O’Brien during a spontaneous road trip across Northwest America truly depicting the youth and free spiritedness that is so specific to the brand.

“When we stopped, it was usually at rivers and small towns where we’d end up hanging out with kids and locals, drinking beers, swimming, exploring and having fun,” said O’Brien.

The collaboration and innovative idea created and captured a true sense of adventure and energy allowing the brand to connect with its audience by sharing the impulsive journey and beautiful memories.

As a strong advocate for the concept of print media, this year I have decided to expand my knowledge and immerse myself in some of history's great literature works.

Now you may be wondering, what exactly do authors and classic literature have to do with fashion? Well first and foremost, most of these novels take their readers back through time, forcing them to explore and discover the culture of a past history…with culture, similarly comes, art, fashion, social norms and trends. Secondly, a large part of the fashion industry stems from the art of writing, whether it's on-line, on a blog, in a magazine or in a coffee table book, people all over the world are constantly writing about FASHION.

By expanding my literary knowledge and forcing myself out of my comfort zone I am aiming not only to grasp a better understanding of iconic pieces of writing, but also further grow and improve my own set of skills so they can be applied to my specific areas of focus.

While searching images for my previous post, I couldn't help but stop to looking closer at these two editorials featuring the wondrous Lily Donaldson, with the alluring Gemma Ward. Both girls have an otherworldly aesthetic to their unconventional beauty which when paired together is only heighten and more prominent. Although slightly outdated, the fashion and style of both shoots creates nostalgic ties to the eclectic and experimental trends of the past, placing fashion in the forefront of everyday experiences and settings. The movement and fluidity of the images is what allows them to be continuously relevant, beautiful and boundary pushing.

No Smoking

Three days into the new year I would imagine there are a few people out there suddenly realising the resolutions they made at 12:00am after the count down are not in fact as easy or as straight forward as they originally thought they were when they made them in their slightly intoxicated state.

One such resolution that comes around year after year is the old faithful, "I will quite smoking this year." This statement is usually followed by the grand gesture of smoking one last cigarette the night of New Years Eve, before throwing an un- finished package into the garbage as if to symbolise the finality of the statement! Come 9:00am the next morning however and it's a whole different scenario, suddenly it's not so easy and subtle reminders of doubt filter into your mind. You realise that you're going to have to work really hard to achieve your goals…which in retrospect is good thing, you'll have to push yourself and challenge your discipline, but when you succeed the sacrifice will be suddenly be worth it.

With this stock standard resolution in mind, I though this slightly crazy off beat photo shoot circa 2009, was strangely appropriate. Lily Donaldson appears in a black comedy editorial in Vogue Paris entitled, 'No Smoking,' channelling what appears to be an unfit example of what a mother should be, cigarettes and all. Patrick Demarchlier captures a truly humorous aesthetic, which when combined with the soft colours and cuts of the fashion can only be taken lightheartedly.

For my last post of 2011 I thought I'd leave you with one of my most important resolutions… to be in New York City this time next year making my resolutions for 2013. Not only do I have an undying love affair with the city, but also with the somewhat cheesy and at times corny I <3 NY t-shirts. It appears that wearing a hat now serves a much greater purpose than purely keeping out the sun. Yes, the benefits of shielding our faces include longer lasting youthful looking skin, however the addition of a statement or staple hat also has the ability to enhance and stylise your sometimes lacklustre and uninspired summer wardrobe.

You know those days where it just gets so hot that putting on anything other than one layer in the form of a paper thin dress is absolutely out of the question? Let alone adding accessories or putting on any kind of footwear that doesn't provide the airflow achieved by a pair of thongs? Sometimes the result is an outfit that's cool, (as in temperature), but not so cool, (as in street style cred). As much as we love summer , in some instances it has the ability to block all our creative individuality, forcing us to frolic around in ensembles lacking oomph and pizzaz… enter THE HAT. Not only does it protect your precious skin from harmful UV rays, but the hat also has an innate ability to add style, mystery and allure to any old summer dress.

Karl Largerfeld's unique and innovative vision allows for him to successfully create magnificently beautiful imagery while telling a story that captures and transcends the true essence and rich history of the Chanel brand and name. These seasonal grown up fairy tales, if you will, create an escape for their audiences, inviting and enticing them to abandoned their apprehensions, disregard ideals of caution and for a few magical minutes neglect their responsibilities as they enter into the stylised world of Chanel where artistry, originality and imagination rule supreme.

I know its semi-old news now, but for those of us who weren’t in the elite group of attendees watching the Victoria’s Secret 2011 show live, tonight’s the night that the spectacular fashion event airs on Australian Foxtel.

The high energy, highly entertaining performance has a reputation for boasting an all star line-up of in-demand models, (aka Angels), flaunting their to-die-for bods in over the top elaborate costumes. One such heavily creature is Miss Anja Rubik, whose impact on the fashion industry is just as dominant off the VS catwalk, as it on.
Anja’s elfin, ethereal aura has commanded the attention of the industry and her innate ability to constantly transform her look has ensured she continues her reign.

Ideals of Contrast

One of the most influential, artistic and powerful editorials of 2011, in my opinion is Lindsey Wixson, by Terry Richardson for Purple Fashion Magazine issue 16. The introduction to the sensationally absurd images cites Cecil Beaton and the revolutionary decision he made in 1945 during the Second World War to photograph a beautiful model amongst the rubble of a bombed out London building, as the source of inspiration.

"Beaton's picture was a prototype for a type of fashion photograph that contrasted expensive high fashion with social devastation, impoverished urban landscapes and squalid streets. This contrast reinforces the beauty of the model and the sophistication of the clothing. But it also highlights overwhelming social inequality."

The unconventional concept of the editorial fuses the ideals of depression, hopelessness, misery, rejection and abandonment with the beauty and desire of fashion and the carefree superior connotations it is predominantly associated with. The destruction and desolation that resonates through the locations is a direct and purposeful contrast to the fashion and elements of frivolity represented by the innocent and angelic Lindsey, creating an almost complete aesthetic of hope amidst the depths of despair.

Waisted Effects

As someone who survived the low rise epidemic of the late 1990s to early 2000s and was similarly a part of the high-waist trend that followed, I can honestly say I have embraced both with equal force. Recently however, I have been noticing a very subtle, very discrete shift that’s seeing the waist line once again moving south. It’s something that’s been happening ever so slowly for the past couple of seasons and suddenly it’s got me wondering if we are going to be forced to once again say goodbye to the beloved trend of high-waisted silhouettes. Despite embracing the, ever so appealing, (note the sarcasm), ‘hipster trend,’ with open arms and insatiable excitement, some seven years ago in my early teens, the thought of repeating this particular era in my fashion history sends a little flutter of panic and anxiety down my spine. Now I obviously don’t expect fashion trends to remain stagnant and motionless, the element of change is what makes it so unique, innovative and artistic, all I am simply saying is at this point in time I’m really not sure if I could willingly embrace the low depths of my past.

Here’s to hoping the trend doesn’t plummet too low, or at least learns to coincide with the high-waisted look we have to thank for years and years of, ‘oh my god!’ iconic fashion moments.

Stockings in Summer? Love it!

Last week’s unusually chilly weather saw me pulling out one of my favourite things about winter… black stockings! Yes that’s correct, last week it was significantly cold enough for me to be wearing stockings…in Queensland…in summer! Completely weird I know, but considering how unpredictable the weather is at the moment I guess anything’s possible, so instead of contemplating the hows and whys, I ran straight to my old favourites to embrace a little touch of winter, before it was once again ripped from underneath me.

I know they’re not everyone’s metaphorical fashion cup of tea, but I find stockings to be the epitome of style. I understand that most people find it difficult to move past the associations that stockings have with work attire, or an old, frumpy and essentially un-sexy look, however through my eyes, if worn correctly, they embody everything that is chic and stylised while possessing an innate element of cool, combined with subtle undertones of rock and roll edge. To me, stockings are an effortless accessory, they go hand in hand with the ultra-cool aesthetic of smoking a cigarette, matte red lips, slightly scuffed up ankle boots, or an abundance of eclectically mixed gold and silver rings. They’re worn by the girl whose individual style is so coveted, it’s emulated everywhere. She’s the girl who inspires your style, the one you want to dress like and more importantly the one whose wardrobe you dream lustfully about…
Of course, one of the most appealing, inspiring and important aspects of my love affair with black stockings is the fact that they were revolutionised by my all time idle, the ever eccentric and always alluring Edie Sedgwick.

Body by Kloss

Despite the negative hype and controversy surrounding this particular K.Kloss shoot for Vogue IT, when looked at through open-minded, non-judgemental eyes, the simplistic yet provocative images capture a serene sense of strength and beautiful moments of power.

When aiming to push controversial limits and stereotypically boundaries, one will always fall subject to scrutiny, so by choosing to feature a lithe-like, elongated, mostly naked Karlie Kloss in her December 2011 issue, it’s no wonder Franca Sozzani has yet again found herself under the critic eye of the public, as they pick to pieces what was a simply beautiful representation of elegance and poise.
The drama surrounding the editorial stems from both Sozzani’s decision to un-publish one of the shots, removing it from the Vogue IT website, and the general public’s personal, unsupported opinions regarding Kloss’ health and figure.

“I did not remove the first picture from the site because I thought it set a bad example due to its thinness, but because I am aware of the fact that people can easily attach labels without thinking, so I believed I could avoid a pointless debate. I made a mistake. I had to do what I thought was right. [It would have been better to], leave the picture and let everybody express their opinion freely. The picture is beautiful and that’s all.” -Franca Sozzani

It’s not the first time experimental and provocative creative concepts in the fashion world have been ridiculed and wrongly miss-interpreted by the public, however as long as we have strong minded, greatly talented industry leaders, like Sozzani, prepared to fight for and defend what they believe, fashion will, as always, continue to cause controversy by challenging the notions of normality.

Model Love: Sasha Pivovarova

After sorting through my uncontrollable and ever growing collection of fashion magazines, the covers from countless Vogues reminded me that I have not yet shared with you my ultimate model crush, Sasha Pivovarova. With ice blue eyes that stare intensely into the camera, I find Sasha’s unconventional beauty and mysterious aura so enthralling and intriguing she has remained at the top of my favourites list since her debut in 2005.

Her illustrious modelling career has resulted in Vogue Paris declaring Sasha as one of the top 30 models of the 2000s and as a favorite of renowned photographer Steven Meisel, she has appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia five times.

Here’s some of my favorite Sasha moments from the past six years…trust me it was hard to narrow down.

Born in Moscow, Russia, Sasha studied Art History at the Russian University for Humanities, but two weeks after her photo was shown to IMG in New York, Sasha opened the fall Prada show in Milan. Shortly after, she the face of Prada, signed an exclusive three year contract with the fashion house and walked in six consecutive runway shows. Sasha lives in her current home and art studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, with her husband, long-time boyfriend and photographer Igor Vishnyakov. As an artist, Sasha’s work has been featured in French Vogue and also exhibited in New York and Paris galleries.

Subtle Awkwardness

My affection for Kristen Stewart comes not from an undying love of the Twilight Saga, (although truth be told I do have one and yes I’ve read all four books…more than once!), but from my adoration of her nonchalant allure and sometime sullen attitude.

Kristen’s introverted demeanour worked flawlessly with the aesthetic of a recent Vogue Italia shoot to produce a look of regal elegance saturated in subtle awkwardness. The concept of minimalism was perfectly contradicted by the elaborate fashion and styling to reflect an ideal of underlying attitude.

As our staple summer singlets get a vintage-washed makeover and become ever more appealing with their thicker sleeves and looser fits, other must-have fashion items are following suit as they become evidently, and unapologetically, ‘male-ized!’
Male-ized? I hear you question, is my take on the sudden embrace of not only our boyfriend’s singlets and shirts, but their shoes, their hats and their over style aesthetic.
Don’t get me wrong, under no circumstances am I condoning that you actually dress head to toe in pieces from your other halves side of the closet, what I am saying is that ladies fashion is taken a few inspirational tricks from their male opponents in order to give our summer style some attitude.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc, (CFDA), is an integral element in the sustainability of the fashion industry. The organisation is committed to nurturing the development of the American fashion industry’s future designers through initiatives like the CFDA Fashion Awards, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the CFDA/Teen Vogue Scholarship.

So before the awards and the nominations begin for another year, I thought I’d better cover, ‘what exactly is CFDA and why is it so important to the industry we love?’ Just to make sure we’re all on the same page!
The organisation’s website featured the most simplified description I could find…

“The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc, (CFDA) is a not-for-profit trade association that leads industry-wide initiatives and whose membership consists of more than 400 of America’s foremost womenswear, menswear, jewelry, and accessory designers. Prada: An Infusion of Hyper-Luxury and Avant Garde Innovation

The influential identity of the brand is largely due to the effective marketing policy, which permits the Prada name to not only convey and identify the brand but also to portray a sense of class, high fashion and sophistication for people across different countries and cultures. Miuccia Prada aims to diffuse the real sense of luxury and sophistication through designing clothes for anti-status dressing. This concept is the source of Prada’s genius, “Think the unthinkable, experiment with ugliness, turn an idea around, then make it beautiful,” (Aspden, 2008).

The company’s first ready to wear collection was launched in 1989 and was admired for its clean lines and elegant minimalism. It is this minimalist approach and innovative creativity that still defines Prada today and sets it ahead in the fashion industry. “There is always diversity amongst Miuccia’s designs as she embraces the power of change,”(Huckbody 2007, 309). Channelling everything from the 1950s airhostess look, to classic shapes and futuristic fabrics, Prada’s collections continue to effectively highlight the relationship the brand creates between luxury and avant-garde art. “Luxury is a relational concept and the significance of Prada’s strategies of distinction is contextualized within the prevailing narratives of luxury,” (Ryan 2007, 9). The success of Prada relies on its ability to create an entire experience of hyper luxury fused with artistic creativity. Regardless of how diverse the inspiration for each seasonal collection, the aesthetic continues to remain in synch with the brand’s image, maintaining an ideal of experimentation and newness. However, as always this is complemented with a connection to reality, allowing the clothes to represent a grounded level of luxury and sophistication, appealing to a wide range of the everyday women. “My search for something new is honest. I want to do something new but it’s not something just for the sake of it fashion should be wearable,” (Miuccia Prada, quoted in Huckbody 2007, 309).

Through its unconventional elegance and innovative design Prada has managed to redefine style and sophistication linking it closely to avant-garde artistic creativity. Miuccia Prada, “Symbolises perfectly the merging of these two multimillion-pound industries. Not only are her collections feted for the kind of conceptual audacity that would shame many a so-called artist but she has also acted as a generous patron for all things cutting edge,” (Aspden 2008). The design house of Prada, recognised mostly for its irregular aesthetics and innovative retail space, has managed to create a culture of style and sophistication to surround the brand. It allows for consumers to purchase more than simply a dress or a handbag, “Prada symbolizes an entire lifestyle of true sophistication, and ultra luxury,” (Aspden, 2008). Prada successfully continues to embody high fashion and all that is associated with it, embracing creativity and integrating art. The social representation that Prada has managed to create is largely due to the creative design of the retail space. “Luxury retailers rely particularly on elements such as location, store fit out and merchandising to support their brand positioning,” (Byrne 2008, under “Prada and Starbucks: the non-place of retail”). The collaboration between Prada and Rem Koolhaas in the creation of the New York and Los Angeles stores are clear examples of the avant-garde approach used in creating consumer space, linking the brands identity to artistic creativity. The store in Los Angels, on Rodeo Drive, “Unlike most surrounding stores, is open to all,” (Sokol 2003). The over all lay out and display of the product remains consistent with the Prada brand identity in that, products are openly available and presented in an innovative manner. “We wanted to use this absence of facade to let the public enter absolutely freely, to create a hybrid condition between public and commercial space,” (Rem Koolhaas, quoted in Byne 2008 under “Prada and Starbucks: the non-place of retail”). A similar approach was taken in the development of the Manhattan flagship store, which explores a public- private mixture and includes a stage for public performances. The stores highlight the company’s supreme brand confidence as all emphasis falls on the architecture and creative consumer space. The idea, Koolhaas said, was to shake up Prada's reputation as one of the most exclusive brands in fashion by stressing an openness, even what he calls an, “Easy,” and, “Welcoming,” quality, (Hawthorne 2004, 1).

Through its ability to intertwine unconventional elegance and avant- garde artistic ideas Prada has successfully created an aura of style, sophistication and class to surround the company. Continual experimentation allows for Prada to be recognised as a hyper-luxury brand, while also remaining in close connection with the art world. The focus of the brand is developing a creative consumer experience. The elaborate architecture used for Prada’s flagship stores in New York and Los Angeles allows for the alternative style of Prada’s designs to become integrated in a museum of consumer space. It is through this relationship that the social connotations of style and sophistication remain closely connected and associated with the Prada brand. Prada is not simply about a singular item, it is an entire experience, a lifestyle associated with class, high fashion and elegance.

Leave it to the fashion industry, (and more pointedly, the boundary pushing hub of creativity at Vogue Italia), to glamourise and glorify the idea of rehab… Some may call it crass, tactless or insensitive, but try as I might, I can’t help but be intrigued and captivated by the artistic excellence and ingenious innovation created and captured by the iconic Steven Meisel.

I know on some levels the concept of this 2007 Vogue Italia shoot may be deemed inappropriate, but that’s exactly what I love about it. It’s outrageous, over the top and boundary pushing and forces us to look at and deal with something that is usually kept in the dark. The manic aesthetic, tragic atmosphere and direct references to fallen celebrities work perfectly to complement the irrational fashion.

Andrzej K Pytel, founder and creative force being The House of Ezis, has a unique approach to the concept of design. Annika Hein speaks with him about his ideas and principals in relation to fashion and architecture, as he aims to cross the boundaries of design and truly integrate them to become an extension of the human form...

C&C: Can you give the readers a brief history of your career and how you started? When did you turn to fashion design and why?
A.P: I completed a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Queensland in 2002, and a Bachelor of Environmental Design at the University of Canberra. In my early career, I worked for Daryl Jackson in Canberra, HOK and BMA in Brisbane. I was also the head designer for the New York Highline competition with A4A architects in Milan, receiving an honorable citation by the jury. However, after only three years of working as an architect, I began to feel frustrated with the repetitive, commercial aspects of the industry and progressively became drawn towards other fields of design. I began exploring with a different range of mediums and materials, applying the design processes acquired from architecture to inform my studies. I then participated in international competitions and several of my works, including a furniture piece and kitchen tiles, were selected and showcased in MiART Milan and Earls Court London Exhibition. The graphic nature of the work led me to experiment with t-shirt print applications and ultimately fashion design as an alternative to architecture.

C&C: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
A.P: My inspiration emerges from the here and now, beginning with movement, gesture and touch to initiate the design process. It is vital to be flexible during the act of making and to allow, encourage, orchestrate and view unexpected mistakes and accidents as arising opportunities and catalysts for change.
Emergence occurs out of the creative act within the context of the female body, shaped by natural forces through response, impulse and reflex actions. Natural forces that influence gestures include thought, body, purpose, context, geometry, material, technology and budget. The key principles to my approach are navigating fluidly, allowing actions to evolve and the concept of change and growth.

C&C: What motivates you?
A.P: The notion of moving forward and living, learning and striving to know more. The excitement of discovery through exploration, with the intent to create novel objects of desire that can be shared and enjoyed by others, while in the search of the ideal form of self-expression.

C&C: Tell me about you current collection
A.P: The current collection, ‘Forgotten,’ has been exclusively produced by an invitation from an arts education organization, ‘Hong Kong Creates,’ and can be viewed at the, ‘Memories of King Kowloon Exhibition,’ in Hong Kong (April 20 - May 31). It explores the concept of unity, (non-duality), through metamorphic growth processes and the idea of disappearance through negative growth, or degradation. This is in reference to the King of Kowloon calligraphy and the nature of his message disappearing within the urban context of Hong Kong, gaining meaning and eventually becoming valuable through remembrance. The design process focuses on the unit and its evolution, without adding or subtracting anything from it, pure change. It is a conscious move away from the permanent/static model, the drawing, pattern/plan, and pre-conception. A move towards the impermanent, natural and the ever-changing.

C&C: What are you favorite fabrics to work with and why?
A.P: Shifting between opaque fabrics, raw silks, digital prints, soft satins, interwoven, shear chiffons and organza to exaggerate structural fluidity through tension. Also, I am constantly exploring geometrically cutout vinyl, manually applied to jerseys to embody the fabric with structure, volume and texture. In essence, working with rigid materials that bring more shape to straight bodies and fluid materials that flow with curves.

C&C: Who do you design for? Who is the target customer and why?
A.P: EZIS inclusively meets the demand of two forms of expression, printed and sculpted. I design for the human body with a primary focus on four types of fit, sharp-structure, soft-drape, fitted-stretch and oversized-relaxed. My target customer is a highly expressive individual seeking an extension that portrays their creative self, performing artists, creative professionals and youth culture.

C&C: Who is your fashion icon and does this influence your designs?
A.P: I highly regard Japanese sensibility to nature and the Japanese folding arts. This definitely has an influence on my work, in particular the connection with the higher self through the meditative act of creation.

C&C: Can you explain your concept and ideas about architecture and design? Why do you feel this is so important?
A.P: Both architecture and fashion are at the core of our existence as physical beings, creating a sense of belonging to our land and wider community. They provide us with shelter, cultural identity and security from the surrounding environment. Their primary function is to enclose or expose the body in different degrees to its environment. Both architecture and fashion act as symbols for remembering our past, where we have been, and where we have come from.
For a long time there has been a distinct separation between architecture and fashion, although we have experienced the two fields borrowing from one another in a constant exchange of knowledge that influence each other’s evolution. On the other hand, we are aware of nomadic lifestyles that blur the boundaries between the two fields, as their sense of belonging to the land is mobile. I believe that with new technologies, and alternative working methods, the two fields can be united, or at least brought closer together.
This is important as we are experiencing a major shift due to the digital era. The computer and the internet now allow us to shop online, work from home and connect through social networks. At the same time, we are able to connect virtually with people from all around the world, which in turn results in a disconnection from nature and one another on a physical level. It’s possible that one day the need to leave the security of our private home will diminish to the point where we will only leave ‘the nest’ purely for the purpose of communal congregation and ceremonial purposes. Once again, architecture and fashion will have to change to accommodate this social shift.
It is important to investigate, question and blur the boundary between architecture and fashion to encourage new forms of exchange between individuals from different walks of life, as well as creating new means of interaction and alternative relationships to the land and the sense of belonging.

C&C: What goals have you set your self for this year, the next five years?
A.P: The primary goals for this year include teaching at QUT, initiating a private lecture series with Michelle Sewell, aligning House of Ezis with the industry buying cycle, further expanding my wholesaling to a national level, completing a Fall/Winter 2012 collection, delivering Spring/Summer 11/12, launching an on-line store, launching TyDi clothing line as a collaboration with Australia’s #1 DJ, creating and publishing architecture and fashion images, aligning three private exhibitions/events with Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth fashion festivals, publishing a book and showing my collection at New York Fashion Week in an off-schedule show.

C&C: What’s your ultimate goal, what do you hope to achieve within your career?
A.P: Build architecture, inspired by knowledge I have gained from fashion, continue to design seasonal collections, blur the boundaries between the two fields and pass on the acquired knowledge gained through my practical research to the new generation of students.

The 46-look range, which was being transported to appear inthe European press day, was comprised of samples from next season and as aresult, despite being worth an estimated $63,000, has very little street value,raising suspicions that counterfeiters were behind the incident.

Europeanpress day allows British fashion editors to not only sample next year’sproducts, but it is also the time where important editorial decisions are made.No collection results in no samples to lend to the magazines in order to createthe necessary buzz around a range.

The theftof Jacobs’ collection will result in significant consequences and once againputs the designer in the negative spotlight again after the controversysurrounding his new Oh Lola! perfume ad featuring Dakota Fanning.

The Art of Dressing Up in the Era of Casual Cool

As fashion moves seemingly into the era of causal cool, and it becomes appropriate to rock a pair of converse on the red carpet, one has to wonder, what ever happened to the art of dressing up?

If you take a look around the hidden treasures throughout my wardrobe, there’s no mistaking that I’m a strong advocate for the concept of effortless chic…give me an oversized tee and some high-waisted leather shorts any day! However, despite my adoration for all things subtly chic, a la MK Olsen and Miss A. Chung, I do believe one still needs to respect, and occasionally pay tribute, to the art of dressing up.

Now if your personal style embodies more of a casual cool, understated elegance, kind of vibe, like my own, chances are you’re not really going to have much of a distinction between your night wear and your day wear, (it’s all about how you style and accessorise it, I know!) and by no means am I suggesting that you change or alter this dynamic, after all, it is a highly coveted, (and copied), look for a reason! What I am proposing however, is to instead merely add a heel here, (when some flats would work just as well), and some statement sequins or velvet there. Trust me your, ‘I like that my style doesn’t fit the cookie cutting mould,’ attitude will still be ever present, it will just be a lil’ glamourised every once in a while.

Doors opened for me and I ran forit,” said Kloss.

InSeptember 2009, US Vogue featured Kloss as one of their favourite faces."She's an amazing model," said Steven Meisel in the article. "She knowsclothes. She has tons of energy. She will add things to the shoot that I wouldnever have thought of." Renya Xydis, the Creative Director and Owner of Valonz, Renya Xydis City, Miss Frou Frou and Salon X by Renya Xydis, first stepped into the hairdressing industry at a mere 15-years-old, “It was the ‘80s and although I originally always wanted to be a cartoonist, the creative side of hairdressing and the chance to make people feel good really attracted me,” she says. In order for a blog to work for your salon, Renya explains you have to have the right clientele and profile, “Blogging connects people in a simple manner, and ours has become a great tool to showcase our work and keep people involved in what we are doing,” she says. Creating a blog has been an area that Renya has wanted to explore and conquer for the last three years, “Working closely with people from ACP made me realise that this is where the younger generation of people are headed,” she explains, “You need your business to be current and on trend.” Renya’s blog has become an imperative part of her business empire and it’s not only her clients and staff who are giving it a glowing review, “We were listed by Vogue.com.au as one of the top five beauty blogs, alongside Bobby Brown and Oprah’s Dermatologist… not bad company to keep!” laughs Renya. It is not only the dynamic of the website that is changing and altering to compliment and work with the blog however, Renya’s approach to and involvement in editorial session work has also evolved, “I am already doing work for sites like, ‘Style me Romy,’ (an online-magazine-like blog), I think it’s great! At the end of the day, it’s all editorial work no matter what medium it is displayed in,” she explains. Despite her love for this instant online platform, Renya assures the business of print media is not in danger, “There is nothing like the tactile feel of opening a magazine,” she says, “Publications like Vogue US have created a name for themselves in the fashion industry and this can never be taken away.”

In addition to constantly travelling around the globe, working with major players in the fashion field and being in constant personal demand from celebrities, stylists and designers alike, Renya’s blog now plays a permanent part in her already chaotic schedule. Renya recently returned from yet another whirl-wind trip overseas, where her talents were requested in London to direct the hair of the Sass & Bide’s Spring/Summer 2012 show for GHD and as always, the details of the event were explicitly covered on her site.
